Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder James Milner etched his name into Premier League history on Saturday, becoming the competition’s all-time leading appearance maker with 654 games. The milestone, achieved during Brighton’s 2-0 victory over Brentford, prompted an outpouring of congratulations from across the footballing world, including a particularly heartfelt message from former Liverpool teammate Andy Robertson.

Milner surpassed the previous record held by Gareth Barry, who amassed 653 Premier League appearances during his career with Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Everton. The 40-year-ancient’s debut in the Premier League came as a 16-year-old with Leeds United in 2002, making him the second-youngest player ever to feature in the league. They played a combined 194 games together during their time at Anfield, forging a strong bond both on and off the pitch. Despite Milner’s departure to Brighton in 2023, the two have maintained a close relationship.

Milner’s record-breaking appearance came in his 40th year, a testament to his exceptional fitness and dedication to the game. He started and played 89 minutes against Brentford, demonstrating his continued ability to compete at the highest level.
