Apple is looking to improve the skin sensors of its AirPods

The patent was filed on July 14 by Apple with the US Patent Office.

Regularly, Apple files patents with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) for one or another new technology that it plans to exploit in the future. Recently, AppleWorld.Today discovered patent number 20220225006 involving electronic devices with “skin sensors”.

Apple says sensors can be used in headphones to help detect when they’re worn in the ears. You’ve probably already noticed that the sensors sometimes have trouble distinguishing between the ears and the hand or a pocket.

The terms Apple refers to in the patent are somewhat complex, but to put it simply, “The reflected light is monitored by a photodetector. The sensor may have a thin film interference filter or other optical structure that overlaps the first and second light emitting devices to reduce the angular spread of light emitted from the skin sensor. This reduces tilt sensitivity and helps improve the accuracy of the skin sensor.”

Apple is reportedly hoping to include the technology in all of its AirPods. However, do not expect it to arrive anytime soon.
