Apraava Energy Raises $92 Million to Deploy Smart Meters and Accelerate India’s Energy Transition with Funding from BII and SCB

India’s Power grid Gets a Boost: Apraava Energy Secures $92 Million for Smart Meter Rollout

New Delhi – December 3, 2025 – Apraava Energy, a leading integrated energy solutions provider in India, has secured INR 8009 million (~$92 million USD) in financing from British International Investment (BII) and Standard Chartered to accelerate the installation of 2 million smart meters across the country. This investment marks a meaningful step towards modernizing India’s power grid and achieving its enterprising energy transition goals.

The funding – INR 4005 million (~$46 million) from BII and INR 4004 million (~$46 million) from Standard Chartered – will directly support Apraava’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) expansion. This initiative aligns with the Indian government’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), a $35 billion program aimed at enhancing power sector efficiency, reducing losses, and promoting sustainability.

A core component of RDSS is the deployment of 250 million smart meters by 2026. These smart meters are designed to improve grid efficiency, increase transparency, and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources, ultimately reducing aggregate technical and commercial losses and lowering emissions.

Apraava Energy is already a key player in the smart metering landscape, boasting a target of installing around 7.8 million smart meters nationwide. The company has demonstrated rapid deployment capabilities, achieving the first operational go-live under the RDSS scheme in Assam and the fastest rollout in himachal Pradesh.

“Just as India stands at a pivotal moment in its energy transition journey, Apraava is charting a new course…,” stated Samir Ashta, Director – Finance & CFO of Apraava Energy. “This financing empowers us to accelerate this journey and help build a low-carbon,customer-centric energy future.”

Shilpa Kumar, Managing Director and Head of India at BII, emphasized the critical role of smart metering in strengthening the energy sector and driving india’s green transition. Prasad Hegde, Regional Head, Infrastructure & growth Finance Group, India and South Asia at Standard Chartered, highlighted the bank’s commitment to supporting India’s sustainable finance goals and reducing carbon emissions.

The investment underscores a growing international commitment to India’s energy transition, with Jamie scattergood, Deputy head of Mission at the British Deputy High Commission in Mumbai, noting the UK’s pride in partnering with India on this crucial initiative.

This milestone investment solidifies Apraava Energy’s position as a leader in India’s smart metering landscape and reinforces its dedication to building a smarter, more

Funding Details and Investor Breakdown

Apraava Energy, a leading energy solutions provider in India, has announced a important $92 million funding round. This investment is earmarked for the large-scale deployment of smart meters and furthering india’s ambitious energy transition goals. The funding comes from two prominent investors:

* British International Investments (BII): A key player in impact investing across emerging markets, BII’s contribution underscores the project’s alignment wiht sustainable development objectives.

* Standard Chartered Bank (SCB): SCB’s involvement highlights the growing financial sector interest in supporting India’s renewable energy infrastructure.

this financial injection positions Apraava Energy to capitalize on the increasing demand for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) within India’s power sector. The investment will be crucial in modernizing the grid and improving energy efficiency.

The Role of Smart meters in India’s Energy Landscape

India is undergoing a rapid transformation in its energy sector, driven by factors like increasing electricity demand, goverment initiatives promoting renewable energy, and a growing focus on energy conservation. Smart meters are central to this transformation. Here’s how:

* Real-time Monitoring: Smart meters provide real-time data on energy consumption, enabling utilities and consumers to track usage patterns.

* Reduced Losses: By identifying and addressing energy theft and inefficiencies, smart meters contribute to significant reductions in transmission and distribution (T&D) losses. India currently faces significant T&D losses, making this a critical area for enhancement.

* Enhanced Grid Management: The data generated by smart meters allows for more efficient grid management, optimizing power flow and improving grid stability.

* demand Response Programs: Smart meters facilitate the implementation of demand response programs, incentivizing consumers to shift their energy usage to off-peak hours, reducing strain on the grid.

* Integration of renewable Energy: Accurate data from smart meters is essential for effectively integrating intermittent renewable energy sources like solar and wind power into the grid.

Apraava Energy’s Deployment Strategy

Apraava Energy’s strategy focuses on deploying smart meters across various distribution companies (DISCOMs) in india. The company is leveraging advanced technologies, including:

* Advanced metering Infrastructure (AMI): A comprehensive system encompassing smart meters, dialog networks, and data management systems.

* iot (Internet of Things) Connectivity: Utilizing robust IoT networks to ensure reliable data transmission from smart meters to utility control centers.

* Data analytics: Employing sophisticated data analytics tools to extract actionable insights from the collected data, optimizing energy distribution and identifying potential issues.

The initial phase of deployment will target high-loss areas and regions with significant potential for energy savings. Apraava Energy is also actively collaborating with DISCOMs to develop customized solutions tailored to their specific needs.

Impact on India’s Energy Transition Goals

This $92 million investment directly supports India’s national objectives for a sustainable energy future. Key contributions include:

* Reducing Carbon Emissions: By improving energy efficiency and facilitating the integration of renewable energy, the project will contribute to a reduction in carbon emissions.

* Achieving renewable Energy Targets: India has set ambitious targets for increasing the share of renewable energy in its energy mix. Smart meters are crucial for managing the variability of renewable sources.

* Improving Energy Access: Enhanced grid reliability and reduced losses will contribute to improved energy access, notably in rural areas.

* Promoting Energy Conservation: Empowering consumers with real-time data on their energy consumption will encourage energy conservation practices.

Benefits for Consumers and Utilities

the widespread deployment of smart meters offers significant benefits for both consumers and utilities:

For Consumers:

* Greater Control over energy Usage: Real-time data empowers consumers to make informed decisions about their energy consumption.

* Accurate Billing: Eliminates estimated bills and ensures accurate billing based on actual usage.

* Potential for Cost Savings: Participation in demand response programs can lead to lower energy bills.

For Utilities:

* Reduced Operational Costs: Automated meter reading and remote diagnostics reduce operational costs.

* Improved Revenue Collection: Reduced energy theft and accurate billing improve revenue collection.

* Enhanced Grid Reliability: Real-time data and advanced analytics enhance grid reliability and stability.

* Better Customer Service: Proactive identification of issues and faster response times improve customer service.
