The administrator of USAID, Samantha Power, met on Tuesday, March 26, with President Bernardo Arévalo to discuss the partnership between that institution and Guatemala.

Spokeswoman Jessica Jennings said the collaboration continues as part of the U.S. strategy to address the root causes of migration and that country’s support for the Arévalo administration’s efforts to combat corruption and help achieve democracy for all Guatemalans.

Power and Bernardo Arévalo discussed shared development priorities in Guatemala, including mobilizing new investments that address poverty, malnutrition and access to education.

Both underscored their shared commitment to building on U.S. and Guatemalan efforts to expand temporary employment pathways for Guatemalans that reduce irregular migration, improve development outcomes, and respect workers’ rights.

Samantha Power emphasized the United States’ strong support for reforms aimed at “holding corrupt actors accountable,” creating economic opportunity, and promoting good governance.
