Arsenal Beat Mansfield: 16-Year-Olds Make History in FA Cup Win | Eze Scores Winner

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

Mansfield Town put up a spirited fight, but Arsenal secured a 2-1 victory in the FA Cup fifth round, booking their place in the quarter-finals for the first time since their winning campaign in 2020. While Eberechi Eze’s second-half strike ultimately proved decisive, the match will be remembered for the historic debuts of 16-year-olds Max Dowman and Marli Salmon, marking the first time a Premier League side has started two players aged 16 or under in any competition.

The victory extends Arsenal’s impressive run this season, bringing their total wins across all competitions to 35 – more than any other European team. What we have is also the most wins the Gunners have achieved in a single campaign under manager Mikel Arteta, surpassing the previous high of 34 set in the 2023-24 season. However, the path to the quarter-finals wasn’t straightforward, requiring a late goal to overcome a determined League One opponent.

Arteta made nine changes to the side that defeated Brighton in the Premier League, handing starts to both Salmon and Dowman. Dowman, at 16 years and 66 days old, became the youngest player to ever start an FA Cup match for Arsenal. Salmon slotted in at right centre-back, while Dowman was deployed in an advanced midfield role. The young duo faced an immediate test as Mansfield started brightly, registering eight shots in the opening 15 minutes – the most Arsenal had conceded in a match during that period this season.

Noni Madueke opened the scoring for Arsenal, but Mansfield responded with a goal of their own, leveling the score and setting up a tense second half. Arteta then turned to his bench, introducing Eberechi Eze, who promptly delivered the winning goal, firing a strike into the top-right corner.

Arteta Praises Young Debutants

Despite the challenge posed by Mansfield, Arteta was quick to highlight the performances of the young players. “Very proud of him [Dowman], very proud as well of Marli,” Arteta said after the match. “Two 16-year-olds starting in the FA Cup. That tells us a lot about them, their personality and the quality that they have. And Max, I think he was exceptional.”

The manager also acknowledged the difficulty of the match and the quality of the opposition. He noted that his team had prepared for the unfamiliar three-man defensive setup “once” and for only “10 minutes,” highlighting the adaptability required on the day.

A Historic Occasion for Arsenal and Young Players

The inclusion of Dowman and Salmon represents a significant moment for Arsenal’s academy and a testament to the club’s commitment to developing young talent. Their debuts come in a competition steeped in history, as Arteta himself acknowledged, praising the “beauty” and “difficulty” of the FA Cup. Arteta emphasized the importance of earning the right to win in such a challenging environment.

The win sees Arsenal progress to the quarter-finals of the Emirates FA Cup, continuing their pursuit of silverware on multiple fronts. They remain in contention for the Premier League title, the Carabao Cup – where they will face Manchester City on March 22 – and the Champions League.

Looking ahead, Arsenal will need to quickly refocus as they prepare for their upcoming fixtures. The team will undoubtedly be assessing the fitness of players like Leandro Trossard and Riccardo Calafiori, who were forced off during the match with injuries, as they navigate a busy schedule. The FA Cup quarter-final draw will determine their next opponent in the competition, and the team will be eager to continue their winning run and chase further success.
