The Haus der Kunst in Munich has opened its doors to a unique and thought-provoking exhibition, For Children: Art Stories since 1968. This expansive show, curated by Andrea Lissoni, Emma Enderby, Lydia Corndörfer, Xue Tan, and a dedicated team, celebrates a pivotal shift in art history were artists began actively involving children and young audiences in creative processes, transforming museums and urban spaces into dynamic sites of exploration.

The exhibition draws inspiration from the profound idea that “the ultimate test of your own understanding is to be able to explain a concept to children,” a sentiment echoed by artists like DIS and Bruce Nauman, whose welcoming voice sets the tone with a repeated “for children.” Visitors are promptly immersed in a world designed for engagement, from collective paintings on marble floors to artificial forests, glowing tents, oversized building blocks, and crawling spaces beneath towering rainbows.

For Children showcases works from over twenty international artists, all created since 1968 with a specific focus on children and young people. This era marked a meaningful departure from art as passive reception, favoring active, collective engagement.Artists like the Munich-based collective KEKS (Kunst, Erziehung, Kybernetik, Soziologie) embraced the urban habitat as a living classroom. The displayed pieces tackle worldwide themes-humanity, society, politics, economics, the environment, technology, and the future-ideas that resonate with us from childhood and shape our adult lives.

The exhibition challenges visitors to consider basic questions: What does it mean to be a child today? What role does childhood play in contemporary society? Can art offer new forms of learning? Is childhood a finite period or a continuous state of being in the world?

Adding depth to the exhibition are historical black and white films, highlighting trailblazing intergenerational art projects in cities like Munich, Rio de Janeiro, Iowa City, and Venice.Harun Farocki’s films further enrich the narrative by presenting the world through the innocent yet perceptive eyes of children.

To further explore these themes, the For Children. Study Days will take place on December 5-6, 2025. This event promises a rich program of panel discussions, performances, and workshops, thoughtfully conceived with researchers and curators Lars Bang Larsen, Kabelo Malatsie, and Kefiloe Siwisa. An accompanying catalog, published by Distanz, will also be available.

Featured Artist Spotlight: We highlighted 12-year-old Leo Maxwell from Portland, Oregon, whose intricate pen-and-ink drawings of local wildlife captivated our editors.

Dragon designs: Expect a stunning collection of dragon artwork,ranging from traditional depictions to wildly inventive interpretations.

Fairy Tale Illustrations: Children have reimagined classic fairy tales with fresh perspectives and captivating visuals.

Original Creature Concepts: We’re thrilled to feature entirely new mythical creatures dreamed up by our young artists.

Submission Guidelines & Deadlines

We are currently accepting submissions for the Autumn 2025 issue, themed “Nature’s Wonders.”

Submission Deadline: August 15th, 2025.

Eligibility: open to children aged 5-14.

Artwork Requirements: High-resolution digital images (JPG or PNG format). Physical artwork must be scanned or photographed clearly.
