On June 6, 1928, 42-year-old Ezra Pound visited Arthur Schnitzler, then 66, in his house at Sternwartestrasse 71 in Vienna-Währing. Pound was one of the most important poets of his generation and had received the $2,000 Dial Award a few weeks earlier in order to, in accordance with the award’s guidelines, “serve God (or go to hell), just as you would want”. In mid-May he was interviewed for the “Wiener Allgemeine Zeitung”. Why did he come to Vienna? “To ask as many questions of the city and the best of its inhabitants as only he, the complicated and all-inquiring Ezra Pound, can answer,” was the cryptic answer given by the newspaper on May 17, 1928. There are largely no sources as to what Pound actually did in Vienna during these weeks. But at least we know that he met a celebrity: Arthur Schnitzler.
