Former school principal in Marseille, Nathalie Laclau, 65, created in 2019 the Association for the Defense of Victims of Asbestos in Education (Avalé 13). A whistleblower, she wants the health of her former colleagues to be better protected. Fixing a shelf or a painting to the wall, repairing a damaged vinyl tile, a half-ripped electrical outlet, “obviously we all have it done in our classes. However, it is precisely when it degrades, due to wear or work, that asbestos turns out to be dangerous. But what did they know regarding the risk, these teachers, DIYers by necessity? “We were in complete ignorance. There was asbestos from floor to ceiling!”, regrets Nathalie Laclau in Marseille.
