Asia’s Largest Tulip Festival 2024: Dates, Location & All Details

Srinagar is preparing to welcome spring with the opening of Asia’s largest tulip garden, the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, on March 16th. The garden, formerly known as the Model Floriculture Centre, promises a vibrant display of blooms and a boost to tourism in the Kashmir Valley. Officials anticipate a significant influx of visitors eager to witness the spectacle, building on the garden’s growing popularity as a premier spring attraction.

Spanning nearly 30 hectares (74 acres), the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden is renowned for its breathtaking views of the Dal Lake and the foothills of the Zabarwan Range. This year, the garden will showcase approximately 1.5 million spring-blooming bulbs, featuring over 70 varieties of tulips, alongside hyacinths, daffodils, and ranunculus. The opening ceremony is set to be inaugurated by Omar Abdullah, according to officials.

A Floral Spectacle in the Kashmir Valley

The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden was established in 2007 as part of the Government of Jammu and Kashmir’s initiatives to promote floriculture and tourism. Built on a terraced landscape consisting of seven levels, the garden offers a visually stunning experience for visitors. Mathoora Masoom, Director of Floriculture in Kashmir, stated that improvements have been made to enhance the visitor experience, including the addition of “selfie points and decorative planters so that visitors get a pleasant atmosphere.”

The garden has seen a steady increase in visitors in recent years. In 2023, over 365,000 tourists, including 3,000 from abroad, explored the blooms, even as 2024 saw over four lakh visitors. Still, the region’s tourism sector faced challenges in 2023 following a tragic terror attack in Pahalgam in April that resulted in the deaths of 26 people.

Planning Your Visit

For those planning a trip to the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, the best time to visit is during the early mornings (before 9 am) or late afternoons to avoid crowds and capture optimal lighting for photographs. The garden is located near Chashme Shahi, approximately 12–18 km from the Srinagar city center and airport, and is accessible by private taxi or local bus.

Visitors should be prepared for pleasant spring weather, but layering clothing and wearing comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The tulip blooms are expected to last for approximately 15 to 20 days, depending on weather conditions. The garden will be open daily from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

The annual Tulip Festival, held at the garden, celebrates the arrival of spring and showcases the diverse range of flowers. The garden currently houses 75 varieties of tulips, and continues to expand its collection.
