Astrocardia: A miniature heart sent into space to understand the aging of heart cells

Cardiovascular diseases are one of the main causes of death in the world and the risk increases with age. Five Belgian companies and research centers (Space Applications Services, SCK CEN de Mol, QbD Group, BIO INX and Antleron) have just developed a project called AstroCardia to better understand cardiac aging and to study it, they will send in 2025 to the ‘ISS, the International Space Station a miniature artificial heart.

Kévin Taburi, expert in radiobiology at the Center for Nuclear Studies in Mol explains: “These are, in fact, human stem cells which are transformed into a mini-heart that we will send to the ISS. The reason is simple, there is in space an acceleration of the aging of the cardiovascular system, we noticed this in astronauts, but we don’t really understand the biological processes that are responsible for it, so we wanted to have a model that was most representative of the human cardiovascular system and expose it to a vacuum.”
