At what age do you dream of retiring? In Fleurus, Zacharie Baudson chose to stop working following a career of exceptional longevity. He is 95 years old and began his apprenticeship when he was 14.

I had to do part of my studies during the war“, remembers Zacharie, born in 1928. “Schools were closed. I had to work from home, notably for a boss who had had polio. He had not been requisitioned to go to Germany. He is a gentleman who taught me a lot, especially how to make pieces by hand. Because, during the war, we mightn’t find the supplies like we do now.

After a few years working for different bosses, Zacharie opened his own jewelry and watchmaking store in 1954. What he likes is the taste for a job well done, the precision. The pleasure of learning, too. He took classes in gemology, the study of precious stones. “This diamond has 53 facets“, he says, showing us the ring he wears on his little finger. But his great joy was first of all seeing happy people buying gifts for weddings, communions, diplomas.
