JOHANNESBURG (AP) — At least 38 people were killed in a fire at a multi-story building in Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest city, according to emergency services.
Another 43 people were injured in the fire that started early Thursday, Emergency Management Services said.
A search and rescue operation was underway and the death toll is likely to rise, agency spokesman Robert Mulaudzi said.
The authorities explained that the fire is almost extinguished, but through the windows of the blackened building located in the center of Johannesburg smoke was still filtering.
