Atlanta, TX Road Work: I-30 Updates – Feb 15-21 | TxDOT Bowie County

by James Carter Senior News Editor

Motorists traveling through Bowie County, Texas, should anticipate ongoing construction along the I-30 corridor as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) continues multiple improvement projects designed to enhance safety and mobility. These projects, impacting a significant stretch of the interstate, range from widening roadways to upgrading frontage roads and bridges.

The most substantial undertaking involves widening I-30 from 0.6 miles west of FM 989 to the Arkansas state line. This project, a key component of TxDOT’s efforts to address increasing traffic volume and aging infrastructure, aims to alleviate congestion and improve travel conditions for both local residents and commercial traffic. The work is part of a larger, phased approach to improvements along the I-30 corridor in the Atlanta District.

I-30 Widening Project Details

Currently, TxDOT is focused on expanding the existing four-lane divided interstate to a six-lane divided interstate over a 6.8-mile stretch. Construction began in August 2020 and was awarded to Longview Bridge and Road, Ltd. For $88.9 million, according to TxDOT officials. Details of the I-30 widening project are available on the TxDOT website.

The widening project includes several key elements:

  • Widening I-30 to six lanes, each 12 feet wide, with 10-foot wide shoulders.
  • Installation of a continuous concrete median barrier to separate eastbound and westbound traffic.
  • Replacement of existing mainlane bridges over the Kansas City Southern Railroad.
  • Reconstruction of the existing asphalt pavement with continuously reinforced concrete pavement.

Frontage Road Improvements Also Underway

In addition to the mainlane widening, TxDOT is also working on improvements to the frontage roads along I-30, specifically between FM 3419 and FM 989. The I-30 Frontage Road Project aims to enhance safety, increase mobility, and improve traffic operations in the area. This approximately 2.4-mile project will construct one-way frontage roads, entrance and exit ramps, and turnarounds.

The frontage road project also includes the replacement of the FM 989 main lane bridge over I-30, ensuring it meets current vertical clearance requirements. Recent intersections will be added at the north and south I-30 frontage roads. While this project won’t directly provide access to FM 3419, it will connect to FM 989, with future connections to FM 3419 planned upon completion of a separate bridge replacement project.

Broader I-30 Corridor Enhancements

These projects are part of a larger series of improvements planned for the I-30 corridor in Bowie County. The I-30 corridor project recognizes the importance of this route for regional travel and trade. TxDOT is also planning future construction projects, with details to be posted on their website as they become available.

The initial stage of corridor improvements, completed between 2006 and 2015, focused on constructing new frontage roads and converting them to one-way operations, along with reconfiguring interchanges. The current phase builds upon that foundation by increasing the capacity of the main lanes.

Motorists are encouraged to stay informed about these projects and potential traffic impacts by visiting the TxDOT website or contacting Tommy Bruce at [email protected] or (903) 838-8574.

As construction progresses, travelers should expect potential delays and plan accordingly. TxDOT will continue to provide updates on project timelines and any necessary lane closures. The completion of these projects is expected to significantly improve the efficiency and safety of travel along the I-30 corridor in Bowie County.
