Attempted Homicide on Derek Chauvin: Black Lives Matter, Supreme Court, and Prison Attack

2023-12-02 07:00:46

An inmate has been charged with attempted homicide for stabbing Derek Chauvin, the police officer convicted of the murder of George Floyd, 22 times. The attack took place in a federal prison in Arizona on November 24, 2023. Derek Chauvin is currently serving a 22 and a half year sentence for the murder of George Floyd in May 2020.

The attacker, John Turscak, deliberately chose the date of the attack, “Black Friday”, in reference to the anti-racist movement “Black Lives Matter”. Turscak was charged with several counts, including attempted homicide punishable by up to 20 years in prison, and assault causing serious injury.

Derek Chauvin survived the attack, but no information has been provided on his current condition. The death of George Floyd sparked major protests once morest racism and police violence, and Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murder in 2021 by the justice system in the state of Minnesota.

The US Supreme Court in November rejected Chauvin’s appeal, which sought to overturn the sentence due to excessive media coverage of the case and the risk of riots.
