The EC4P isn’t just a technological upgrade; it’s a strategic move to simplify processes, reduce hardware requirements, accelerate the introduction of new features, and bolster IT security. Virtualization and Millisecond Precision in Vehicle Assembly

At Audi’s Neckarsulm body shop, the EC4P is being deployed in a large-scale production environment for the A5 and A6 series. Virtual programmable logic controllers (vPLCs) are replacing traditional hardware controls, allowing around 100 robots to work together with remarkable precision – measured in milliseconds. This level of coordination is currently unmatched in the industry, enabling Audi to produce hundreds of vehicle bodies per day across three shifts. Built on the company’s “P-Data Engine” – a cross-plant data platform – ProcessGuardAIn analyzes machine and sensor data to detect anomalies, predict potential issues, and provide insights to experts. Pilot programs are underway in the Neckarsulm paint shop, focusing on dosage optimization and anomaly detection in cathodic dip painting, with full-scale deployment planned for 2026.

Future-Proofing Production: Automated Wiring Harness Installation & IPAI Collaboration

Audi is also investing in future technologies, such as the Next2OEM project, which aims to fully automate the production and installation of wiring harnesses – a process that currently remains largely manual in the automotive industry. This project, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, promises to significantly reduce logistics efforts and shorten response times to design changes. Additionally, Audi is collaborating with the Innovation Park Artificial Intelligence (IPAI) in Heilbronn, leveraging external expertise to develop innovative solutions like AI-supported dryer control in the paint shop, potentially saving significant energy.
