In the Engadine it is simply called “the queen of the Alps”, the Swiss pine – a conifer known to the Austrians as the Swiss stone pine and the Germans as the Swiss stone pine. In the Alpine region, the tree is a symbol of endurance, strength and courage to face life. It can withstand temperatures of 40 degrees below zero as well as heavy snow loads. On hot days, the conifer secretes an essential oil that protects it from too much sunlight.
