A Life Divided

“Since their exodus to America in the aftermath of the country’s Revolution, the Clan has sought refuge and isolation from the Outside in the forests of the Appalachians, where the shadows harbor secrets and whispers of the group’s clandestine rituals echo throughout the mountains,” writes Kathy Davidson, author of the new novel “The Way of the Clan.”

born into the Clan, Gus’s childhood is irrevocably altered when his father rebels against the oppressive traditions that govern their lives.Adopted by a kindhearted pastor and his wife, Gus grows up immersed in the world of “Outsiders,” embracing the teachings of the christian faith. Years later, his peaceful existence is shattered by his encounter with Lora, a woman from his past life, forcing him to confront a destiny he thought he’d left behind.

Facing the Shadows

“Born into this world of twisted beliefs, when his life is threatened, Gus is spared by his father’s rebellion against the oppressive traditions of their religion. Adopted by a kindhearted pastor and his wife, the newborn grows up immersed in the world of the Outsiders and the ways of the Christian faith,” Davidson explains.

“Years later, gus’s peaceful life is shattered when he befriends Lora, a captivating girl from the Clan. Bound by an unknown connection and driven by a divine mission to liberate Lora from the Clan’s grasp, Gus must confront the shadows of his past as he challenges the very essence of the group’s existence,” she continues.

Unveiling the Truth

“For centuries, the Clan has lived by the strict religious rules of the Way, but when a chance meeting with an Outsider triggers a series of events, it could destroy the sect forever,” Davidson shares.

The Way of the clan: A Conversation with author Kathy Davidson

Kathy Davidson, welcome to archyde! We’re thrilled to discuss your captivating new novel, The way of the clan. Let’s dive right in.

The Secretive Clan

Your novel explores a secret society known as the Clan, hidden away in the Appalachian Mountains. Where did the inspiration for this intriguing concept come from?

Kathy Davidson: I’ve always been fascinated by isolated communities and the idea of shadows and secrets lurking in the most unexpected places. the Appalachian Mountains, with their vast, untouched landscapes, seemed like the perfect setting for such a community. The Clan and their religion, the Way, evolved organically from that premise.

A Life Divided

Our protagonist, Gus, has a unique upbringing. He was born into the Clan but raised as an Outsider. How did you approach writing such a complex character arc?

Kathy Davidson: Writing Gus’s character arc was both challenging and rewarding. I wanted to explore how his divided past shapes his present and influences his decisions. Growing up with a Christian faith while knowing he’s part of a shunned community added layers to his identity, driving him to question, confront, and ultimately, find his true path.

Confronting Shadows

Gus’s journey takes him deep into the heart of the Clan, forcing him to confront his past and the darker aspects of his heritage. What themes did you wont readers to reflect on as they follow Gus’s journey?

Kathy Davidson: I wanted readers to contend with themes of identity, belief, and the lengths people go to protect what they hold dear. Gus’s struggle to reconcile his past and present challenges us to consider how our histories shape our futures, and whether we can ever truly escape our roots.

Unveiling Truths

Your novel is a suspenseful thriller that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. Did you face any challenges in balancing the mystery and tension with the exploration of deeper themes?

Kathy Davidson: Maintaining that balance was indeed a challenge. I wanted to build suspense while also peeling back layers to reveal the complex dynamics within the Clan and Gus’s personal journey. I hope readers find that the thrilling plot and thought-provoking themes complement each other seamlessly.

For Our Readers

As we wrap up, what message or thought would you like readers to take away from The Way of the Clan?

Kathy Davidson: I’d like readers to reflect on the power of courage and confrontation, not just in overcoming adversity, but in challenging our beliefs and embracing our true selves. Of course, I also hope they’re left eager to join Gus on his next adventure!
