Sony’s latest flagship wireless earbuds, the WF-1000XM6, arrived promising refinements to an already impressive formula. After several weeks of testing, the new earbuds deliver on many fronts – particularly sound quality and noise cancellation – but a familiar issue persists: comfort. The core of the problem, it seems, lies not with the design itself, but with the ear tips Sony continues to include.
This isn’t a new critique. Following the launch of the WF-1000XM5, concerns were raised about the fit and long-term comfort of the earbuds, specifically relating to the ear tips. Now, with the WF-1000XM6, Sony has maintained the same ear tip design, leaving some users, including myself, wondering if a crucial opportunity for improvement was missed. The question for potential buyers is whether the audio benefits outweigh the potential discomfort.
A Familiar Feel: The Ear Tip Dilemma
Sony first introduced the current polyurethane ear tip design with the WF-1000XM4 in 2021, describing them as offering a tighter, more stable fit thanks to their unique, bubble-like texture designed to reduce noise. As What Hi-Fi? notes, the initial XM4 offering included three sizes (small, medium, and large). The WF-1000XM5 added an extra-small size, addressing feedback from users with smaller ear canals. However, the WF-1000XM6 continues with the same selection, offering no new size options.
The issue isn’t necessarily about size, but the material itself. These tips aren’t traditional memory foam or silicone; they’re a hybrid. This hybrid material, while intended to provide a secure fit, doesn’t offer the same pliability as either of those alternatives. I find myself constantly feeling the tips pushing against my ear, requiring frequent adjustments to achieve a proper seal. It’s a subtle discomfort, but one that detracts from the overall listening experience.

How Do They Compare?
The difference in comfort is noticeable when compared to other premium earbuds. Apple’s AirPods Pro 3 utilize “foam-infused eartips” with a new layer of foam-infused microspheres, offering a thicker, more substantial feel. Bose’s silicone eartips are shallower and less domed, providing a secure seal without excessive intrusion into the ear canal. Even the Award-winning Technics EAH-AZ100 feature relatively bulbous tips with a thinner dome, minimizing discomfort.
A recent test by PCMag highlighted similar concerns, noting that the larger shell of the XM6 doesn’t necessarily translate to better comfort. Internal feedback within What Hi-Fi?’s review team suggests this isn’t an isolated experience.
Performance Still Shines
Despite the comfort concerns, the WF-1000XM6 earbuds deliver exceptional audio quality and noise cancellation. The upgraded drivers and noise-cancelling processor provide a truly immersive listening experience. As MajorHiFi points out, Sony has consistently set the standard for premium true wireless noise-cancelling earbuds, and the XM6 builds upon that legacy. When a secure fit is achieved, the results are impressive, and it’s important to remember that ear shapes vary, making fit a highly personal experience.
The WF-1000XM6 are priced at $329.99, a $30 increase over the WF-1000XM5’s current price of $299.99, according to PCMag. While the price increase reflects the upgraded technology, the persistent ear tip issue remains a point of contention.
the Sony WF-1000XM6 are excellent earbuds, but the comfort issue is a significant consideration. While not a dealbreaker, it’s a factor potential buyers should be aware of. Sony’s decision to revisit the ear tip material in future flagship models could significantly enhance the overall user experience. Perhaps a seem at the tips used in their more affordable models, which don’t utilize this hybrid design, could provide a starting point for improvement.
