Thornton, Colorado – A fast-moving grass fire near Thornton has forced the closure of Interstate 25 in both directions, triggering evacuations and causing significant traffic disruptions Wednesday afternoon. The blaze, which ignited near West 84th Avenue and Huron Street, prompted a swift response from local authorities and emergency personnel.
As of 1 p.m. Mountain Time, I-25 was shut down between Colorado 224/70th Avenue in Welby and 104th Avenue in Thornton, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. Thick, black smoke was visible from miles away, drifting across the highway and impacting visibility. The on-ramp from eastbound Interstate 76 to northbound I-25 at 70th Avenue, and the on-ramp from northbound I-25 to eastbound U.S. 36 were too closed to traffic.
The fire’s proximity to populated areas led to immediate evacuation orders. Pinnacle Charter High School and surrounding businesses were evacuated as a precaution, and police began going door-to-door in neighborhoods northeast of the fire to ensure residents were safe. According to the Colorado Public Radio, several roads in the area were also closed to facilitate emergency operations.

Thornton Police Department officials stated that while manual evacuations were underway, anyone feeling unsafe should evacuate immediately. A designated safe gathering location was established at Water World amusement park for those needing shelter. The exact boundaries of the evacuation zone remain fluid, but authorities emphasized the priority is the safety of residents in the affected neighborhoods.
The grass fire also caused widespread power outages. The Denver Post reported that Xcel Energy was responding to outages impacting thousands of customers. More than 2,900 customers in Jefferson County near Arvada and Westminster were without power, along with 200 customers in Adams County near Sherrelwood, and numerous smaller outages throughout the region.
