CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – NC State men’s basketball faced a daunting challenge on the road Tuesday night, falling to No. 11 Virginia 90-61. The Wolfpack (19-9, 10-5 ACC) struggled from the outset, unable to overcome a strong Cavalier performance and a significant shooting disparity. The loss highlights ongoing inconsistencies for NC State as they navigate a competitive ACC landscape and raises questions about their ability to contend with the conference’s top teams.
Head coach Will Wade acknowledged the stark reality of the game, stating, “We’re not ready to compete with the top of the league right now. That’s just a fact. Got our doors blown off twice by Virginia. Virginia’s a great team, give them credit, they’re better than us, they’re better than us at almost every spot.” The defeat marks the second time this season Virginia has defeated NC State by a wide margin, underscoring the gap between the two programs.
The Wolfpack’s offensive struggles were immediately apparent, missing 11 of their first 12 shots. This cold start quickly put NC State behind, falling to a 15-5 deficit early in the game. Despite a valiant effort to stay within striking distance for a portion of the contest, the Cavaliers’ relentless offense proved too much to handle. Virginia shot 53% from the field and 46% from three-point range, although NC State managed only 29% from the field and 27% from beyond the arc, according to ESPN’s game stats.
McNeil’s Effort Not Enough
Sophomore guard Paul McNeil provided a bright spot for the Wolfpack, scoring a team-high 22 points. While his three-point shooting was off – making just 3 of 12 attempts – McNeil effectively drove to the basket, scoring 13 points on layups and free throws. However, even McNeil’s strong individual performance couldn’t compensate for the team’s overall struggles. “We didn’t move the ball,” Wade explained. “We couldn’t get clean looks and the clean looks we got we didn’t hit. Some of our poor shots led to their transition baskets.”
Second-Half Collapse and Ejections
Virginia dominated the second half, outscoring NC State 58-42 and shooting 70% from the floor. The Cavaliers capitalized on fastbreak opportunities, racking up 24 fastbreak points, and connected on 12 three-pointers throughout the game. The game also saw a heated exchange that resulted in ejections and technical fouls. Senior center Scottie Ebube was ejected for clearing the bench, while senior forward Darrion Williams and UVA’s Sam Lewis received technical fouls. Wade stated he didn’t have a clear view of the incident, adding, “I was calling timeout and then whatever happened happened.”
Inconsistent Performance Plagues Wolfpack
The loss to Virginia continues a pattern of inconsistency for NC State this season. The team has demonstrated flashes of brilliance, including an impressive 82-58 victory over North Carolina, but has also suffered significant defeats, like this 29-point loss on the road. “We just been up and down all year, this is kinda who we are,” Wade admitted. “When we’re poor, we’re really really bad. That’s just kinda who we’ve been.” Senior guard Quadir Copeland, typically a key contributor, struggled with foul trouble and finished with only three points, further hindering the Wolfpack’s offensive efforts.
NC State will appear to rebound as they travel to Notre Dame for a Saturday matchup. Tipoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. And will be broadcast on The CW. The Fighting Irish recently suffered a loss to Virginia, falling 81-70, as reported by the Associated Press, and will be seeking a bounce-back performance against the Wolfpack.
The upcoming game against Notre Dame presents an opportunity for NC State to address their inconsistencies and demonstrate their potential within the ACC. Whether they can find a more consistent level of play remains to be seen, but the team’s ability to overcome their current struggles will be crucial as they approach the end of the regular season.
