GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Arizona Wildcats and Arizona State Sun Devils set the pace on the opening day of the 2026 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championship, presented by Allstate, at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina. Arizona’s women’s team and Arizona State’s men’s team currently hold the top positions in the team standings after a series of competitive events. The championship, a key event in collegiate swimming and diving, continues through Wednesday with preliminary heats beginning at 10 a.m. ET and finals at 5:15 p.m. ET, all streamed live on ESPN+.
The Arizona women kicked off the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay, finishing in a time of 1:35.54. The winning quartet included Lila Lillie, Eleni Gewalt, Patricija Kondraskaite and Julia Wozniak. They narrowly edged out Arizona State, who secured second place with a time of 1:36.10, whereas Cincinnati rounded out the podium with a time of 1:36.84. On the men’s side, Arizona State dominated the 200 medley relay, setting a latest Big 12 Championship record with a time of 1:20.96. The Sun Devils’ team of Adam Chaney, Andy Dobrzanski, Ilya Kharun, and Tommy Palmer claimed gold, followed by Arizona (1:24.83) and TCU (1:25.06).
Competition extended beyond the pool, with diving events likewise taking center stage. Utah claimed gold in both the Women’s Team Diving event (312.55) and the Men’s Team Diving event (371.95). TCU secured silver in both events, scoring 312.25 in the women’s competition and 346.85 in the men’s. Houston earned the bronze medal in the Women’s Team Diving event with a score of 289.70, while Arizona took bronze in the Men’s Team Diving event, posting a score of 339.50.
Sun Devils Shine in Freestyle Relays
Arizona State continued its strong performance with a gold medal in the women’s 800 freestyle relay, finishing in 7:01.39. The Sun Devils’ team of Jordan Greber, Gerda Szilagyi, Grace Lindberg, and Albane Cachot finished nearly seven seconds ahead of Arizona, who clocked a time of 7:08.05. Cincinnati secured another bronze medal, finishing in 7:13.25. The Sun Devils closed out the evening with another victory in the men’s 800 freestyle relay, setting another Big 12 Championship record with a time of 6:08.31. Filip Senc-Samardzic, Jonny Kulow, Quin Seider, and Remi Fabiani combined for the win, with Arizona finishing second (6:12.65) and Utah taking third (6:17.20).
As the first day of competition concludes, Arizona leads the women’s team standings with 172 points, closely followed by Arizona State with 168 points and Cincinnati with 158 points. On the men’s side, Arizona State leads with 180 points, with Utah (168) and Arizona (166) closely behind. The competition is expected to remain fierce as teams vie for the Big 12 championship title.
