Louis Bloom, the president of Island EMI Label Group, has been on an emotional rollercoaster lately, thanks to the excitement surrounding Mumford & Sons. “I have had sleepless nights with how excited I am,” Bloom shared, reflecting his deep passion for the band he signed back in 2009 while working in Island’s A&R department.
As Mumford & Sons launch their latest album, Prizefighter, expectations are high. Early reports indicate that the album is a frontrunner for the No. 1 position on the charts, with positive feedback pouring in from both critics, and fans. The album, produced by Aaron Dessner, showcases a range of collaborations, featuring artists such as Chris Stapleton, Gigi Perez, Hozier, and Gracie Abrams, along with co-writes by Justin Vernon of Bon Iver and Finneas.
“The reception to Prizefighter has been brilliant, deservedly so,” Bloom noted. “Watching the streams, the reviews… Everything’s been very positive, not just here, but internationally, too. It just feels like there’s an overwhelming amount of love for this band.” This release follows the success of their previous album, Rushmere, which also debuted at No. 1.
A Journey Together
Bloom’s journey with Mumford & Sons has been one of mutual growth and discovery. “They were massive for me, personally. More than the success, they have taught me a lot,” he said. Bloom emphasized the importance of community building in the band’s ethos, noting how they naturally bring people together. “It was always about community. It was a very spiritual thing watching them at those early shows. Now they’ve influenced a whole generation.”
Strategic Release Plans
The rapid turnaround since the release of Rushmere was part of a deliberate strategy. Bloom explained, “The last Dave Cobb-produced album was like a warm hug for their fans; that’s how Ben Lovett described it. It started bringing everyone in.” For Prizefighter, the strategy involved minimal major promotional efforts and a focus on fan engagement. The team worked on building anticipation through grassroots activations, keeping energy high without saturating the market.
“We kept our powder dry for this album, which we always saw as a more sustainable streaming album, more of a crossover,” Bloom stated, crediting the groundwork laid since 2023, including collaborations with Pharrell. This careful planning has proven effective, as the band has seen a significant resurgence in popularity.
The Power of Collaboration
Mumford & Sons have always thrived in collaborative environments. Their musical journey has been marked by partnerships within various scenes, from the new folk movement in London to collaborative tours. Bloom pointed out, “Mumfords were always part of scenes. They’ve continued to connect with artists, whether through train trips for music-making or by supporting each other’s projects.”
With featured artists from their personal circles rather than purely strategic marketing decisions, the authenticity of their collaborations shines through. The friendships formed over years have led to genuine musical interactions, enriching the album’s sound and appeal.
Looking Ahead
As the album’s release week unfolds, Bloom expresses optimism for Mumford & Sons’ future. “They’re on fire. I feel very honoured to be involved, and so does the whole team,” he said, reflecting the shared commitment of everyone involved in the campaign. With a headline performance scheduled at BST Hyde Park this summer, the band is poised to reconnect with fans on a grand scale.
Bloom believes that the upcoming album could set new records for the band. “My expectation and hope is that this album is going to be on a streaming level – not just a physical level – their best and their biggest to date, leading into BRITs and the Grammys next year.”
Looking beyond Prizefighter, Bloom is excited about other projects in the pipeline, including new music from artists like Lola Young and Dermot Kennedy, and the continued success of Mumford & Sons. “It’s a good start to 2026, and we’re trying to lead across genres,” he remarked.
As Mumford & Sons continue to evolve, their impact on the music scene remains undeniable. Their journey, filled with heart and collaboration, serves as a testament to the power of community in music. Fans are eagerly watching to see what comes next.
