Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has publicly criticised Arise Television anchor Rufai Oseni, accusing him of hypocrisy and disrespect, a dispute that has quickly spread across social media. Edochie’s criticism, delivered in a viral video, centres on a past incident involving Oseni and allegations of improper conduct towards guests during interviews.
The actor questioned Oseni’s moral authority to challenge political leaders and guests on national television, referencing a reported incident in Lagos where Oseni was allegedly caught driving in a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane. According to Edochie, when confronted by officials, Oseni responded defensively, asking if they knew who he was and threatening to contact the Lagos State governor. “Is this not the same Rufai Oseni that was caught driving on BRT lane?” Edochie asked in the video. He claimed Oseni only issued an apology after a video of the incident became public.
Edochie further accused Oseni of being disrespectful to guests during interviews, alleging that the anchor makes guests uncomfortable and dismisses their concerns. “How can you invite somebody and craft the guest uncomfortable?” Edochie questioned. He claimed Oseni has told guests who express discomfort they are free to abandon the studio, rather than attempting to create a more welcoming environment. “If a guest is not comfortable, the first thing you do is apologise and make the guest feel at ease,” Edochie stated.
The actor characterised Oseni’s interview style as “not journalism,” criticising what he described as a confrontational and insulting approach. “You are insulting people on national TV. You’re a very disrespectful person,” Edochie said.
The video also included a defence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with Edochie urging critics to show respect and allow the administration time to govern. “Jagaban President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the President of Nigeria, whether you like it or not. He is our President, you must respect him,” Edochie declared, echoing the sentiment that “Rome was not built in a day.”
The exchange highlights a broader debate about the role of journalists and public figures, and the standards to which they should be held. The incident involving Oseni and the BRT lane, as referenced by Edochie, has resurfaced in online discussions, prompting scrutiny of the Arise TV anchor’s past conduct.
As of Friday, March 6, 2026, Rufai Oseni has not publicly responded to Yul Edochie’s criticisms. Arise Television has also not issued a statement regarding the matter.
