Lionsgate has unveiled its latest action-packed film, “Ballerina,” directed by Len Wiseman and starring Ana de Armas. The film, which has just arrived in Italian cinemas, is drawing comparisons to the John Wick saga, with fans eagerly anticipating its fresh take on the revenge genre.
Eve’s Journey: From Ballerina to Aspiring Killer
“Ballerina” features Ana de Armas as Eve, a woman seeking vengeance for her father’s death. The film’s title is explained by De Armas herself: “Awaken, the character I play, is a classic ballerina who, driven by a thirst for revenge, decides to undergo killer training in the tradition of the Ruska Roma.” The story unfolds during the events of “John Wick: Parabellum,” before the fate that awaits the ex-assassin in the fourth chapter of the saga.
Connecting the Dots with John Wick
The film includes references to scenes from “Parabellum,” but this time from a different perspective. Director Len Wiseman describes a visit by Wick to “the Director,” played by Anjelica Huston, as a look into Wick’s own training and brutal boarding school experience. “It’s like taking a look at the beginnings of Wick, which, as it now happens to Eve, went through his own training,” Wiseman says. “In a sense, it is the opposite of the main story. As he tries to get out of the system, she wants to enter it to become a killer.”
Action-Packed and Heartfelt
For her role, De Armas trained extensively in martial arts and weapon use. “Not only physical training, martial arts, etc., but I also had to learn to use weapons,” she says. “I remember worrying about myself a lot when, after four months of training and a few days before the start of filming, I was told that what we had done was only half of the choreographies that I should learn and that the rest would be done on the set, during the shooting.” Despite the intense action, the film also offers heart and humor, making it a well-rounded cinematic experience.

Lionsgate has announced the production of a fifth John Wick film, ensuring that fans of the franchise have more action-packed adventures to look forward to. “Ballerina” not only connects with the existing John Wick narrative but also introduces a parallel world, offering a fresh perspective within the universe.
