Bakhmout is located in the Donbass, at the center of a triangle between the cities of Donetsk (to the south), Kramatorsk-Sloviansk (northwest) and Sievierodonetsk (northeast). Kramatorsk, a strategic railway hub, is in Ukrainian hands. Sievierodonetsk is occupied by the Russian army following a bitter and deadly battle. Bakhmout is a link in this industrial region of Donbass dotted with towns of 70 – 100,000 inhabitants, born of the industrial revolution. Many cities in this region of eastern Ukraine specialized in one type of industry. In the case of Bakhmout, it was the extraction of salt. And it has been since the 17th century. The preponderant white gold in the local economy, just like in its neighbor Soledar (literally “city of salt”), in its inner suburbs, a city conceded to the Russians at the end of January. For the other cities, we can mention Kadiivka (“Stakhanov” in Russian) and its coal (the famous worker Stakhanov worked in the mines), the iron and steel industry for Mariupol (railways), the chemical industry for Luhansk and Donetsk; agricultural equipment in Melitopol, coke ovens in Sloviansk; cables in Berdyansk; the automobile in Zapporijjia; or further west, Dashava and its natural gas.
