basmati rice sold by Carrefour could contain a toxin

The supermarket giant specifies that “only a large quantity of contaminated products can lead to health problems.”

The supermarket giant Carrefour announced on January 8 in a press release the recall of basmati rice sachets of its own brand, conditioned by the Italian company Curti SRL. For good reason: ochratoxin A, a toxin potentially present in the product.

«Ochratoxin A is a mycotoxin produced by several microscopic fungi», Explains the Carrefour press release. It is a substance naturally present in several plant products (cereals, dried fruits, cocoa …), and “only a large quantity of contaminated products can lead to health problems», Specifies the brand. Indeed the mycotoxin can be carcinogenic according to theEuropean Food Safety Authority, and in particular for the kidneys.

The product affected by the recall is the 1 kg packet of Carrefour basmati rice, whose EAN code is 3560070837984, and whose use-by date and batch number is 07/01/2022. The brand recommends that customers who have purchased these rice bags “not to consume them and to bring them back to the point of sale where they were purchased for a refund“.
