BBVA is expanding access to its banking services by integrating its app directly into OpenAI’s ChatGPT, initially for customers in Germany and Italy. This move positions BBVA as one of the first financial institutions to offer this level of direct access within the widely used conversational AI platform, offering a modern way for customers to interact with financial products and information.
The integration allows ChatGPT users to explore BBVA’s offerings – including account conditions, card types and savings products – through natural language queries, all without leaving the ChatGPT interface. BBVA anticipates this will evolve into a personalized digital companion, helping users craft informed financial decisions. “Being available directly in ChatGPT means moving towards a more natural, accessible, and seamlessly integrated form of banking in people’s everyday lives,” stated Murat Kalkan, Global Head of Digital Banks at BBVA, according to a BBVA press release.
This initiative is part of a broader strategic collaboration between BBVA and OpenAI, focused on leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance both customer experience and operational efficiency. BBVA has been actively adopting generative AI, and this partnership aims to create a more customer-centric financial services model. The bank has already expanded access to ChatGPT Enterprise to 120,000 employees, following a successful trial with 11,000, reporting productivity gains and the creation of over 2,900 custom AI applications, as reported by Parameter.
How to Access the BBVA App within ChatGPT
Currently, the BBVA app within ChatGPT is available exclusively to users in Italy and Germany, and interactions must be conducted in Italian or German. Users can access the app in two ways: through a dedicated link or by searching for “BBVA” within the ChatGPT Apps section – located on the top left of the desktop interface or within the top-left menu on mobile devices.
Once located, users will be prompted to connect the BBVA app to their ChatGPT experience. After connection, users can interact with BBVA directly within the conversation using the “@BBVA App” tag followed by their query. For example, a user could inquire, “@BBVA App What are the advantages of the BBVA account?”. Alternatively, the BBVA app can be selected from the plus (+) menu in the chat input. The app then provides a personalized response, with options to explore other products and view related questions and answers from other customers.
BBVA first presented a concept for this ChatGPT integration in Milan in December, signaling its commitment to innovative digital interactions, as noted in a blog post on BBVA.de. The launch in Germany and Italy represents the first live implementation of this concept.
The bank’s digital banks in Italy and Germany are leading the way in this innovation, according to BBVA. The move reflects a broader trend of financial institutions exploring the potential of conversational AI to improve customer engagement and streamline banking processes. A demonstration of the app is available on YouTube.
Looking ahead, BBVA expects to further refine and expand the capabilities of the ChatGPT integration, aiming to create a more intuitive and personalized banking experience. The bank’s ongoing collaboration with OpenAI suggests a continued focus on leveraging AI to transform financial services.
