Beating the Heat: Stay Cool and Safe with the National Heat Protection Plan

2023-07-15 06:58:29

Drink enough, eat lightly, avoid exertion and stay in the shade: This is what doctors throughout Europe recommend to survive hot summer days. But is that enough? After all, climate researchers are predicting new heat records and an increasing number of tropical nights in which the temperature will not fall below 20 degrees Celsius.

In Germany alone, according to official figures, around 4,500 people died last year as a result of extreme heat; a current study even assumes that almost 8,200 heat-related deaths occurred. Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach wants to better protect Germans from the heat in the future and has presented his plans for a national heat protection plan that expressly takes France as a model.
