The cooling water contained the chemical ‘propylene glycol’, a type of food additive, and was colored red to indicate leakage. Because of this, the color of the sea water was dyed red.

The beer factory said that the cooling water leak was repaired around 9:30 am that day.

“The cooling water is harmless to the human body and will not affect the marine environment,” a plant official said through the Yomiuri Shimbun.

A local health official also explained that “there will be no significant impact on the environment” and that “propylene glycol is generally safe.”
