Autonomous cars will not be allowed to drive on Belgian roads, Mobility Minister Georges Gilkinet (Ecolo) told Het Nieuwsblad on Tuesday.

In Germany, certain Mercedes models with level 3 autonomous driving are allowed to drive on highways. This level of autonomy allows the driver, under certain conditions, to let go of the steering wheel.

The manufacturer hoped to offer this technology in Belgium as well, but legal authorization will not come: “I am not in favor of it“, indicates Minister Gilkinet (Ecolo). “This is an intermediate form of autonomous driving: people who sit in their car playing are not alert enough to intervene quickly if necessary.”

Autonomous vehicles are rather interesting for the logistics sector, however, says Gilkinet. “We have already carried out several studies on this subject and a pilot project is also underway.
