Belgium’s Artificial Energy Island: Latest News and Unexpected Costs Revealed

2023-07-28 19:31:37

Among the wind turbines of the North Sea, an artificial energy island will take place in 2030, responsible for “centralizing” the electricity produced and then sending it to the country. This must be one of the major components of Belgium’s electrical future. However, a note presented to the last Council of Ministers suddenly reveals an additional cost: one billion euros more than expected!

News from the newspaper “The evening”which might affect our future bills.

An island facing La Panne

This project constitutes a world first, an ultra-modern scale project praised as much by the Minister of Energy Tinne Van der Straeten, as that of the North Sea Vincent Van Quickenborne or the Prime Minister.

This infrastructure should make it possible to produce 3.5 GW by 2030, with the help of the European recovery plan. It is the centerpiece of the Belgian energy transition.

Superlatives abound for this area project “Princess Elizabeth” off La Panne. This project will be launched between 2024 and 2026. Except that according to the latest study by Elia, manager of the network and the site, which arrived on the table of the last Council of Ministers on July 20, the note promises to be higher by one billion euros compared to a first estimate, to settle at 3.566 billion!

In question: inflation, the increase in the price of raw materials or financing costs, given the rise in interest rates.

Contacted, Elia refuses to confirm, citing a premature amount while the calls for tenders are in progress. On the side of the Minister of Energy, we are staying the course: we need renewables to lower bills and the island remains the most efficient and cheapest mode. And on a simulated impact of 35 to 65 euros per year more per household, the minister refers to the future dialogue between Elia and the Creg, the regulator, to see what might be passed on to household bills. At this stage, nothing is yet fixed, decided. It also remains to be seen what the government will do at the start of the school year, with this unforeseen and unwelcome additional slate to start an electoral campaign.
