Benefits and harms of tomatoes – Al Marsad Libyan newspaper

“Tomatoes are compatible with the diet of people who care about the number of calories in their food. Because 100 tomatoes contain 18 calories. They also contain vitamin C, dietary fiber, magnesium and potassium, which are essential for cardiovascular health. Tomatoes are an important source of the antioxidant lycopene, which protects the body’s cells from the effects of free radicals. It is enough to consume 200 grams or half a cup of tomato juice per day to get the body’s daily requirement of it. By the way, heat treatment does not affect lycopene, so the benefits of heat-treated tomatoes are no less than those of fresh tomatoes,” she says.

But tomatoes, like other nightshades, contain the toxic compound solanine, which is most concentrated in unripe fruits. Of course, a small amount of it does not cause any harm to the body. Therefore, there are no restrictions on eating tomatoes for healthy people.

People with chronic digestive system diseases should eat tomatoes with caution, because they contain oxalic acid, which irritates the mucous membrane of the digestive system and causes heartburn and abdominal pain. Gout patients are also not advised to eat tomatoes because they aggravate the disease.

In general, tomatoes are beneficial for health and can be eaten fresh, cooked or grilled.
