The launch of Benin’s seed cotton marketing campaign (2023-2024) was made official on Friday November 10, 2023 in the commune of Nikki by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Gaston Dossouhoui.

550,000 tonnes of seed cotton are expected at the end of the campaign, according to forecasts. Production down compared to the 2022-2023 campaign which was 750,000 tonnes. Despite this low yield, the sector remains dynamic, reassured the Minister of Agriculture.

During the 2022-2023 season, a considerable drop was noted with a yield of 705 thousand tonnes instead of 766 thousand tonnes recorded in 2021-2022. Minister Gaston Dossouhoui, in his intervention, returned to the main causes linked to this failure. Firstly, an insect pest came to reduce yields and also climatic problems. Secondly, he insists on the lack of control of the new SSP fertilizer by cotton farmers. Finally, he reassures regarding the dynamism of the sector and urges each actor to play their part in order to improve results.

The president of the cotton farmers, in turn, also spoke of the discontent of certain farmers who implemented their threat to boycott cotton production. All this therefore further reinforced this remarkable decline.

For this campaign, only 550 thousand tonnes of production are expected according to forecasts for the year 2023-2024.
