Benin’s Sporting Rise: Medals, Investment & a New Sports Nation | 2024 Success

Benin is rapidly emerging as a significant force in African sports, marked by a surge in international success and substantial government investment. In 2024 alone, the nation’s athletes secured 318 international medals, including an impressive 90 gold, across a diverse range of disciplines. This remarkable progress is underpinned by over 3 billion FCFA in public funding and a concerted effort to professionalize its sports federations, signaling a new era for Beninese athletics.

The increased focus on sports isn’t limited to financial backing. A key component of this transformation is a nationwide infrastructure boom, aiming to provide athletes with world-class training facilities and opportunities. This investment is already yielding results, with notable achievements in football, karate, basketball, and handball, raising Benin’s profile on the continental and international stage.

The government’s commitment extends beyond funding and facilities. According to Ahmed Taofik, Advisor to the Minister of Sports, a cornerstone of the initiative was the construction of 22 stadiums throughout Benin. “So, the first thing that the President put in place was the construction of 22 stadiums across Benin. That is to say today, even in remote areas, we still have football, basketball, handball, etc. Fields to international standards. Through this, several young people today make a living from sport, they are paid for the sport part,” Taofik stated.

Football remains a flagship sport for Benin, with the national team, the “Cheetahs,” qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN 2025) and achieving a landmark victory against Nigeria. However, success is spreading across multiple disciplines. Karate has consistently delivered medals at the African level, while 3×3 basketball and handball are making significant strides in continental competitions. Improved conditions for athletes, both domestically and during international travel, are likewise contributing to enhanced performance and visibility.

Karate Leads the Charge

Rock Quenum, President of the Beninese Karate Federation, highlighted the impact of presidential support. “The President helped us, because he understood the sport thing. If we made an effort beforehand, he showed us that we could reach the big leagues. And I can guarantee you that Benin, with regard to martial arts, karate in this case, the tatamis on which we go internationally, no other country in the region goes there,” Quenum said.

The ambitious infrastructure plan includes the construction of 22 sports stadiums equipped with synthetic turf, athletics tracks, and modern stands, representing an investment of approximately 39 billion FCFA, according to official reports. Further developments include the construction of a national arena, renovations to stadiums in Cotonou, Porto-Novo, and Parakou, and plans for an Olympic swimming pool. The creation of sports companies and increased budgetary allocations for federations are designed to solidify Benin’s position as a regional sports hub.

Economic Impact and Future Plans

The surge in sporting success is also having a positive economic impact, creating employment opportunities for young athletes and contributing to the growth of related industries. The government’s total revenue collected by financial authorities in 2024 reached 1.895,6 billion FCFA, representing 14.6% of the GDP, according to a report from the Commission of Finance and Exchanges reported in Economia24. This increase in revenue is partially attributed to the growing sports sector and related economic activities.

In October 2024, Benin secured approximately 74.5 billion FCFA in financing agreements during the World Bank and International Monetary Fund Annual Meetings in Washington D.C. as detailed by La Nouvelle Tribune. These funds will be allocated to key sectors including agriculture, vocational training, and access to potable water, indirectly supporting the development of sports infrastructure and athlete welfare.

Looking ahead, Benin aims to continue its trajectory of sporting growth, leveraging its investments in infrastructure, athlete development, and federation support. The nation’s commitment to sports is not merely about winning medals; it’s about fostering a culture of athleticism, promoting national pride, and creating opportunities for its youth. The focus will remain on strengthening existing programs and exploring new avenues for international collaboration and excellence.
