MiscellaneousThe renovation of the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu is at a good pace. In the interior, work on the new system of a mobile playing field is in full swing. Against the backdrop of an alleged schedule for spectators to return to the stadium, there seems to be less time than expected.
Football is currently out of the question in the Bernabéu
MADRID. Although the Spanish league, which has been interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic since mid-March, will continue from June 11, normal football operations are out of the question – at least not at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. The home of Real Madrid gives an increasingly unusual picture of itself in the course of the renovation.
While the dismantling of roof and barrel continues, several excavators in the interior have removed half the playing field and made both the lower tier on the west straight and that on the south stand a pile of rubble.
What’s behind it? According to media reports, it is the work on the new lawn system, which is said to be associated with the modernization of the football temple. As already reported, the playing field will in future be able to be extended and retracted in several pieces and the associated storage area will be built under the west stand. After the public first heard of such a plan through the sports newspaper MARCA in mid-May, the measures appear to be in full swing.
Erection of the lawn system: less time than expected
Because of an alleged project to return football matches with spectators in the stands, the royal contractor FCC Construcción apparently has to make do with it. The idea: From the next season, which is due to start on September 12, 30 percent of the total capacities in the stadiums may be used, 50 percent from November and 100 percent again from 2021.
“Hurry up, Bernabéu”, headlined the sports newspaper AS, according to which Real had assumed that, due to the coronavirus pandemic, it would only play in front of fans again from the next calendar year. In this case, the Bernabéu could be converted undisturbed for ten months. The last game was played there against FC Barcelona on March 1st. In the meantime it is clear – although not yet officially confirmed: Zinédine Zidane’s star ensemble will play at least for the rest of the season at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano. The current Bernabéu pictures allow this conclusion once again.
Nacho welcomes the move to the stadium
“It would be strange to play in the Bernabéu without an audience”, Nacho Fernández commented on the upcoming move MOVISTAR +: “We have to adapt and have time for it. I know the Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano very well, it’s nice. ” On June 14th, it starts against the Basque LaLiga opponent SD Éibar.
