Award-winning actor and singer Billy Porter has revealed a harrowing health battle that nearly cost him his life. The 56-year-old star disclosed he was clinically dead for three days whereas fighting a severe case of sepsis, a life-threatening condition stemming from a urinary tract infection. The illness forced him to withdraw from his role as the Emcee in the Broadway revival of Cabaret in September 2025.
Porter shared the details of his ordeal in a recent appearance on the Outlaws podcast, describing the experience as both terrifying and transformative. He emphasized the fragility of life and the long road to recovery that followed his hospitalization. The actor’s story highlights the dangers of sepsis, a condition that affects millions globally each year.
Sepsis occurs when the body’s response to an infection spirals out of control, causing widespread inflammation and potential organ damage. “When they got in there, there was so much puss and bile, and infection, behind the stone,” Porter shared, detailing the initial discovery of a kidney stone lodged in his urethra. “It bubbled up and I went uroseptic in minutes.” He was quickly placed on an ECMO machine – a form of life support – as his condition rapidly deteriorated. “I was dead for three days,” he stated. “I am a miracle. I’m a walking miracle.”
Complications and Recovery
Porter’s health crisis didn’t end with his revival. While still in a coma, doctors discovered he had developed compartment syndrome in his leg, a painful condition where swelling and pressure cut off blood flow. “They had to cut me open on either side of my leg while I was in a coma, and from my knee to my hip, and leave it open for two days,” he explained, “so they could save my leg.”
The actor’s withdrawal from Cabaret was confirmed by producers on September 8, 2025, who stated doctors advised him to prioritize rest during his recovery, as reported by the BBC. The show ultimately closed on September 21, earlier than its originally scheduled end date.
A Career Interrupted, A Life Re-evaluated
Porter rose to prominence for his groundbreaking role as Pray Tell in the FX series Pose, earning him an Emmy Award in 2019 as the first openly gay Black man to win in the lead actor in a drama series category.
