Howard University’s Historic March Madness Run
Howard University, often referred to as “The Mecca,” made history in the 2026 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. The Bison secured their first-ever tournament victory, defeating the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) 86-83 in the First Four on March 17th. Even as their journey ended in the first round with a 101-80 loss to top-seeded Michigan, the team’s performance was a source of immense pride. Coach Kenneth Blakeney expressed his admiration for players Bryce Howard and Ose Okojie, stating, “I’m so proud of these guys and I love them so much.” This milestone represents a significant achievement for the historically Black university and its athletic program. A Century of Joy: Norma Hyatt’s 100th Birthday
Norma Hyatt, a resident of Queens, Novel York, recently celebrated her 100th birthday in style, dancing to the music of Bob Marley surrounded by loved ones. Hyatt immigrated to the United States from Kingston, Jamaica in 1955 and dedicated 34 years to a career as a lab technician. During the celebration, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards presented Hyatt with a Citation of Honor, recognizing her longevity and contributions to the community. Hyatt shared a simple yet profound piece of advice for a long life: “Love your neighbors.”
Supporting Entrepreneurship: New Edition’s Act of Kindness
Legendary R&B group New Edition, currently touring with Boyz II Men and Toni Braxton, demonstrated a commitment to community and entrepreneurship in Philadelphia. Michael Bivins, a member of New Edition, and other group members encountered individuals selling bootleg New Edition merchandise outside their tour bus. Pantora Bridal, a Black woman-owned company known for its sophisticated and stylish bridal wear, has expanded its reach with the opening of a second brick-and-mortar boutique in Baltimore, Maryland. The company already has a thriving location in Brooklyn, New York. Andrea Pitter, the owner of Pantora Bridal, expressed her gratitude for the support from the DMV (DC, Maryland, and Virginia) region, stating on Instagram, “For years, the DMV has shown up for this brand in a real way, building community with us even when we didn’t have a physical home here. To now plant roots here and serve this community in creative ways, means everything to me.”
