Blinken announces the return of American, Canadian, Dutch, and Finnish citizens from northeastern Syria

United States – US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced that his country had returned 11 American citizens from northeastern Syria, including five minors, and described it as “the largest single repatriation operation from northeastern Syria to date.”

He stated in a statement, “In addition, we resettled in the United States a nine-year-old non-American citizen who is the sibling of a minor American citizen,” noting that “as part of this process, the United States also facilitated the return of six Canadian citizens and four Dutch citizens.” And a Finnish citizen, including eight children.”

He pointed out that “regarding 30,000 people from more than 60 countries outside Syria remain in the Al-Hawl and Roj camps for displaced persons, the majority of whom are children.” As governments repatriate their citizens, we urge thought and flexibility to ensure that family units remain intact to the greatest extent possible.”

He stressed that “the only permanent solution to the humanitarian and security crisis in the camps for the displaced and detention centers in northeastern Syria is for countries to return refugees to their homelands, rehabilitate and integrate them, and ensure accountability for mistakes when appropriate,” adding: “The United States is committed to helping those countries.” Which seeks to repatriate its citizens from northeastern Syria, and find solutions, including resettlement, for those who cannot return to their communities or countries of origin.”
