But first this: what is Freemasonry?
Freemasonry is an international movement that originated in the 18th century. The brotherhood and sisterhood is active in more than 60 countries and has many members in France and Belgium. According to the latest official figures, our country has 25,498 Freemasons, divided over 401 groups (‘lodges’ or ‘workshops’ in their terms).
It is a close-knit society that, according to its own words, puts values such as freedom, equality and charity first. “Anyone who says that certain groups should not participate in society, who makes homophobic or misogynistic statements, who believes that every person should make his or her own plan, does not belong in Freemasonry,” the episode says.
Freemasons regularly meet to discuss social problems and phenomena in private circles. Members present so-called ‘building pieces’ – speeches, as it were – on themes that are close to their hearts.
They call each other brother and sister. They call anyone who is not initiated profane.
