Bluesky received an important update in October with several security-related improvements. Today, the social network that aims to compete with X (formerly Twitter) reached version 1.60 with a new icon and more options for publications that can now be viewed without logging in.
Starting with the logo, Bluesky’s CEO, Jay Graber, states that the butterfly was chosen because it represents the transformation that the social network is going through, as if it were emerging from its chrysalis, becoming open now that public posts can be viewed without Login.
It is a symbol of change and transformation. Early on, we noticed that people were organically using the butterfly ???? emoji to indicate their Bluesky accounts. We loved it and embraced it as it spread. The butterfly speaks to our mission to transform social media into something new.
In addition to viewing publications, it is also possible to use Bluesky’s search without logging in, making the social network more open, a process that must continue with the development of alternative applications to use it, as emphasized by Graber:
Many other apps and experiences are already starting to emerge – there are thousands of custom feeds, dozens of other clients, and atproto will eventually support other apps. We hope that Bluesky, as the first app, will be a catalyst for change and transform the way social media works, like a butterfly flapping its wings.
If you do not want your posts to be seen by those outside of Bluesky, simply activate restricted mode in the Moderation Tab of the application in version 1.60. On the other hand, Bluesky warns that “other applications may not respect this setting.”
