Boat Accident in Brazil: 6 Dead, Including 4-Year-Old Child

by Omar El Sayed - World Editor

Six people, including a four-year-old child, died after a boat collided with a pier on the Rio Grande, on the border of the states of São Paulo and Minas Gerais, on Saturday night. The accident occurred between the municipalities of Rifaina (SP) and Sacramento (MG), according to reports from local authorities. Nine other individuals survived the incident.

The tragedy unfolded as the group was traveling on the river after leaving a floating bar, heading towards a ranch in the region, according to Lieutenant Vicente de Paula Teixeira Junior of the Fire Department. Witnesses reported that the boat struck a pier that lacked both lighting and signaling, contributing to the collision. The incident has prompted an investigation into safety measures along the Rio Grande.

Among the victims was Wesley Carlos da Silva, 45, who was reportedly operating the boat without the necessary qualifications, as reported by G1, citing information from the Military Police. As well killed were Bento Aredes, 4, and his mother, Viviane Aredes, who would have turned 36 on Sunday. Viviane Aredes was the sister of Isabela Aredes, the first lady of Patrocínio Paulista (SP), and Bento was her nephew. The municipality of Patrocínio Paulista has declared official mourning, expressing condolences through a statement on Instagram.

The other victims have been identified as Juliana Fernanda de Oliveira Silva Ferreira, 40. Erica Fernanda Lima; and Marina Matias Rodrigues, 22. The bodies of the six victims were transported to the Legal Medical Institute (IML) in Araxá for further examination, according to authorities.

Unlit Pier Cited as Contributing Factor

Initial reports indicate the boat collided with an unlit pier on the Rio Grande. The lack of illumination and signaling on the pier is being investigated as a potential contributing factor to the accident. Rescuers, including local residents, firefighters from Sacramento and Uberaba, and the Rifaina Municipal Civil Guard (GCM), responded to the scene.

Two survivors were treated for minor injuries at a health unit in Rifaina and have since been released. The remaining seven survivors did not require hospitalization. The CNN Brasil reported that three victims were quickly located by rescuers, while the other three were found by an amateur diver who was in the vicinity.

Investigation Underway by Minas Gerais Civil Police

The Minas Gerais Civil Police (PCMG) has initiated a technical investigation into the accident. According to a statement sent to GLOBO, forensic experts have been dispatched to Sacramento to gather evidence and determine the precise circumstances surrounding the collision. The investigation will focus on the condition of the boat, the pier, and the actions of the operator, Wesley Carlos da Silva.

The incident has raised concerns about safety regulations and enforcement on the Rio Grande, a popular waterway for recreational boating. Authorities are reviewing protocols for nighttime navigation and the requirement for proper lighting and signaling on piers and other structures along the river. The Diário da Região reported that the GCM confirmed the lack of illumination on the pier at the time of impact.

The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safe boating practices, including adherence to speed limits, the leverage of life jackets, and awareness of potential hazards. Authorities are urging boaters to exercise caution and prioritize safety when navigating the Rio Grande and other waterways.

As the investigation progresses, authorities are expected to release further details about the cause of the accident and any potential safety recommendations. The focus will be on preventing similar tragedies from occurring in the future and ensuring the safety of those who enjoy the Rio Grande for recreational purposes.
