Boise State men’s tennis, currently ranked No. 66 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), will host its annual Spring Invitational this weekend, March 6-7, at the Boise Swim & Racquet Club. The invitational will feature a competitive field of six teams, including several nationally ranked opponents.
The Broncos kick off the invitational on Saturday, March 6, with a 2 p.m. MT matchup against Idaho State, followed by a 6 p.m. MT contest against Montana. Boise State will conclude the invitational on Sunday, March 7, with the opponent and start time to be announced following the results of Friday’s competition. This event provides a crucial opportunity for the Broncos to test their skills against a diverse range of opponents as they prepare for the remainder of the season.
The invitational field includes No. 56 BYU, No. 65 Gonzaga, Idaho, Idaho State, and Montana, promising a high level of competition. The tournament format will divide the teams into two brackets for round-robin play on the first day. Saturday will then feature matches to determine placement in first, third, and fifth positions, based on Friday’s results.
Scouting the Competition
Idaho State enters the weekend with a 6-3 record, though they have recently faced a challenging stretch, dropping their last four matches. The Bengals suffered 7-0 losses to UNLV and No. 71 Utah State, a 6-1 loss to Northern Arizona, and a close 4-3 defeat against No. 47 BYU. Historically, Boise State has dominated the series against Idaho State, holding a 42-10 overall advantage and a 16-match winning streak.
Montana also presents a familiar opponent for the Broncos, entering the invitational with a 4-3 record. The Grizzlies have experienced losses to Utah State, Utah, and Denver. Boise State boasts a commanding 42-1 all-time record against Montana, with their only defeat coming on February 4, 2022, in a narrow 4-3 decision.
Milestone Watch and Recent Accolades
Several Broncos are on the verge of reaching significant milestones. Taiyo Kurata needs just two more singles victories to reach 20 for the season, whereas Filip Soderqvist is three away from the same mark. Idriss Haddouch is also nearing a milestone, sitting three wins shy of 10 victories this season. In doubles play, Stewart Aronson and Soderqvist are one win away from 15 victories as a pair, and Carson Baker and Avery Tallakson are three wins away from reaching the same milestone.
Filip Soderqvist was recently recognized for his strong performance, earning Mountain West Freshman of the Week honors on February 18. This marked the first weekly award of his career and the first for a Boise State player this season.
