Booking.com is not allowed to acquire the Swedish online travel agency Etraveli. The European Commission announced this on Monday. The takeover would make Booking too powerful.

Etraveli, which works under names such as Gotogate and Mytrip, mainly sells air travel. The company claims to be the second largest online travel agency in Europe. Booking, which is currently the largest online travel agency in Europe, wanted to acquire the company for more than 1.6 billion euros.

The European Commission previously announced that it objects to the takeover. Booking then tried to adjust the purchase in such a way that the Commission would still agree to it.

The Commission did not agree with the adjustments and decided that Booking should not take over the Swedish company. Otherwise, the booking company would become even more dominant in the travel industry.
