Boosting Electric Car Adoption in Belgium: Flanders’ €5,000 Bonus Incentive and Walloon Government’s Approach

2023-09-26 20:02:31

Currently on our Belgian roads, only one in ten electric cars is purchased by an individual, the others being company cars. To stop this phenomenon and above all encourage households to take the plunge, Flanders has decided to grant from 2024 a bonus of €5,000 for any new electric car costing less than €40,000.

For Walloon dealers, the south of the country needs to get on board. According to the Steveny group spokesperson, electric cars are too expensive. Only financial aid will really push users to abandon their thermal car.

But from the side of the Walloon government, it seems that this is not a priority. “In Wallonia, we have reviewed the registration tax system which remains interesting for electric cars, in particular for small and medium-sized vehicles.“, recalls Philippe Henry (Ecolo), Walloon Minister of Mobility. “Now it’s clear that we have a lot of things to do. In the immediate future, it does not seem a priority to us to subsidize the purchase of new cars, even electric ones..”

In Wallonia, but also in Brussels, we are counting more on the fall in electricity prices and on its second-hand market.
