That really wasn’t the fine British way! Sir John Eliot Gardiner himself has decided he must retire following his hand apparently slipped. According to reports in the New York Times, the British conductor slapped singer William Thomas backstage following he stepped off the podium on the “wrong” side. Gardiner apologized for the embarrassing incident that took place following the concert performance of Berlioz’s opera Les Troyens at La Côte-Saint-André, France.
