Halle Berry, director and Oscar-winning actress (in 2002, for her performance in the film In the Shadow of Hate) recently spoke on the stage of the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity regarding the harmful taboos on women’s sexuality, their mental health, and the importance of deconstructing these. In the wake of his speech, the interpreter of Catwoman took the time to discuss with the editor-in-chief of Women’s HealthLiz Plosser, to support her point.

“If we start this conversation regarding these taboos that harm us, most women will follow. You know why ? Because it’s something we’re dying to do,” begins the 56-year-old actress.

According to her, the most important thing to owning your sexuality as a woman is to accept the stage where you are and to assume it. In the midst of menopause, she continues to learn regarding herself and questions everything she thought she knew regarding that moment. At least, everything society wanted him to believe regarding this moment: “Your life is over”. “You are disposable. “Society no longer has a place for you. “You should retire.” “You should pack your bags.”

Halle Berry attacks in particular the injunctions to become a mother, past a certain age. “If you are in your twenties, assume them. Own the Age of Exploration. […] You don’t need to be in a hurry, you don’t need to be forced. It’s not a race”, insists the actress. “If you’re in your thirties, don’t be put off by the idea that you have to have children by a certain age. It’s up to you.”
