Brenner Base Tunnel: 2032 Opening Date in Doubt

Doubts are growing over the 2032 completion date for the Brenner Base Tunnel, Europe’s largest infrastructure project, as challenges with rail technology and other complications emerge, according to reports from the Tiroler Tageszeitung.

Approximately 90 percent of the 230-kilometer tunnel system has been excavated, but the timeline for operational readiness is increasingly uncertain. The project, connecting Austria and Italy, aims to revolutionize freight transport and passenger travel between the two countries and beyond, reaching Germany. A breakthrough in the exploratory tunnel was celebrated in December 2023, symbolically linking Austria and Italy underground for the first time, with the attendance of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker.

As of July 2024, around 75 percent of the overall project was complete, with 171 of the 220 kilometers of tunnel already excavated, according to the operator. Approximately 1,200 workers are currently involved in the construction. The construction at the Ahrental site, between Innsbruck and Schönberg, involves the installation of thousands of pre-fabricated concrete tunnel segments, known as “Tübbinge,” with 90 being produced daily at a dedicated on-site factory.

The decision to manufacture the Tübbinge on-site at the Sillschlucht-Pfons section was driven by the lack of a rail connection, avoiding the need to transport the ten-ton components by truck. These segments are then transported into the mountain via a specialized vehicle and rail system. The tunnel system itself requires a three-kilometer access tunnel for construction and ventilation.

The project is intended to facilitate faster and more efficient rail connections between South Tyrol, Austria, and Germany, with new timetables planned for operation in 2032. However, the Tiroler Tageszeitung report suggests that this date is now in question due to ongoing technical difficulties.
