Alabama native Brett Carlisle, the current frontman for the rock band Great White, is moving forward in the competition on American Idol after a performance that impressed judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan. Carlisle, 28, earned a “golden ticket” to Hollywood Week with his rendition of Great White’s ballad “House of Broken Love” during the Monday episode of the show.
What made the audition particularly notable was the support Carlisle received from his bandmates, Mark Kendall and Michael Lardie, who joined him onstage. The judges were unanimous in their praise, with Lionel Richie stating, “Especially when you rock, you’re going to be the poster child for this.” The performance resonated so strongly with Underwood that she requested Carlisle and the band perform another hit, “Once Bitten, Twice Shy,” for her enjoyment, according to Consequence.
From Alabama Stage to National Spotlight
Carlisle, who grew up near Birmingham, Alabama, described the experience as unique, telling Alabama.com, “I’ve never been with that many singers at that level before in a room, and it was cool that we all got to nerd out with the time that we had in the waiting rooms and everything else.” He added that he encountered “some really, really good people, all genres” during the audition process.
The singer expressed gratitude for the support of Kendall and Lardie, calling them “legends” and acknowledging that Richie commented he sounded like he had “a machine behind me.” Kendall, a founding member of Great White, echoed Carlisle’s sentiments, describing the experience as “fun” and a “great experience” for Carlisle. He noted the lengthy day – a 12-hour commitment from 6 a.m. To 6 p.m. – but emphasized the band’s willingness to support Carlisle’s opportunity.
A New Chapter for a Rock Veteran
Carlisle joined Great White in 2022, becoming the band’s fourth frontman since 2011, following a change from original singer Jack Russell, who passed away in 2024. The band is currently scheduled for a series of U.S. Tour dates in 2026 alongside glam metal band Slaughter.
The audition process wasn’t without its surprises. Carlisle initially planned to perform Steelheart’s “We All Die Young,” but opted for “House of Broken Love” to include his bandmates. “It was a way for me to show them that I appreciate them in their off time flying across the country to support me,” he explained.
Carlisle acknowledged the stark contrast between performing for a live rock audience and the studio environment of American Idol. “A thousand percent” different, he said, noting his love for the energy of a crowd. Despite the unfamiliar setting, he received positive feedback from the judges.
The next round of auditions for American Idol will resume on February 16th on ABC.
As Carlisle prepares for Hollywood Week, he’s balancing his commitments to American Idol with ongoing performances with Great White. The journey from rock stages to national television represents a significant moment in his career, and fans will be watching to see how he progresses in the competition.
