A victim of multiple sexual assaults committed by members of the congregation of the Brothers of Saint-Gabriel testifies to TVA Nouvelles.
This victim, whose identity is protected and will be called André for the purposes of the interview, attended a boarding school where he was allegedly sexually assaulted, between the ages of 10 and 13, by different members of the congregation. .
The atrocity he would have experienced would have caused following-effects that are still present today and would have tarnished the relationship with his two children. “When my children reached the age of prepuberty around 10 years old, I might no longer hold them in my arms,” he says in an interview with TVA Nouvelles.
André would have prevented himself from having a close relationship with his children. “I am convinced that they suffered,” he adds.
Victims invited to come forward
This man is speaking out to encourage other victims of the Brothers of Saint-Gabriel to come forward. “Do it, it will free you,” the victim concludes.
Last fall, a Superior Court judge approved a settlement agreement in a class action filed once morest the Brothers of Saint-Gabriel.
This agreement includes monetary compensation and a letter of apology to each of the victims who suffered sexual assaults committed between 1940 and today.
The total settlement amount might be up to $26 million, depending on how many people come forward. Now, more than 110 victims have given their testimony.
Those who wish have until Friday January 19 to register.
