Bruins Sign James Hagens to AHL Tryout Agreement | Boston Hockey News

The Boston Bruins are giving highly touted prospect James Hagens a taste of professional hockey. General Manager Don Sweeney announced today that the team has signed Hagens to an Amateur Tryout Agreement (ATO) with the Providence Bruins, their American Hockey League affiliate. This move allows the 19-year-old forward to begin his professional career immediately, gaining valuable experience although the Bruins retain flexibility regarding his future contract.

“We’re very excited to have James join the Bruins organization and take this next step,” Sweeney said in a team statement. “James is an important part of our future, and this is a great opportunity for him to receive immediate experience at the professional level in Providence and continue his development, while keeping all options open.”

Hagens is expected to join the Providence Bruins for practice on Tuesday, March 24th, at 10:15 a.m. At the Amica Mutual Pavilion. This early integration into the AHL roster signals the Bruins’ commitment to accelerating his development.

From Boston College Star to Pro Prospect

Hagens arrives in Providence after a stellar two seasons at Boston College. This season, he led all Hockey East skaters with 47 points in 34 games, scoring 23 goals and adding 24 assists. He too paced the Eagles with six game-winning goals, two hat tricks, and 133 shots on goal. His impressive offensive output earned him a spot on the Hockey East All-Rookie Team after a strong freshman campaign in 2024-25, where he registered 37 points (11 goals, 26 assists).

Over his two years with Boston College, Hagens skated in 71 games, totaling 34 goals and 50 assists for 84 points. His transition to the professional ranks comes after being selected seventh overall by the Bruins in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft.

A History of International Success

Before his collegiate career, Hagens honed his skills with the United States National Team Development Program (USNTDP) from 2022-2024, where he established himself as a prolific scorer. He recorded 72 goals and 115 assists for 187 points, ranking fifth in program history. His success extends to the international stage, representing the United States at both the IIHF World Junior Championships (2025, 2026) and the IIHF U-18 Men’s World Championships (2023, 2024).

Hagens has a decorated international resume, winning gold medals at the 2025 World Juniors and the 2023 U-18 Men’s World Championships. He also holds the IIHF U-18 Men’s World Championship single-tournament scoring record with 22 points in 2024, earning tournament MVP honors and leading the United States to a silver medal.

What’s Next for James Hagens?

The ATO allows Hagens to gain professional experience without burning a year of his entry-level contract. This provides the Bruins with valuable insight into his readiness for the NHL. His performance in the AHL will be closely monitored as the organization evaluates his development path. The signing of Hagens to an ATO is a significant step in his journey toward becoming a key contributor to the Bruins’ future success. Fans will be watching closely to see how quickly he adapts to the professional game and impacts the Providence Bruins’ performance.
